What is it with our Medial Insurance Companies? Why can one person receive more diagnostic tests - while another person with the same medical problem does not get as many or none at all?

What do we have to do as good American citizens to bring attention to the fact that our Medical Insurance and Medical Care are all tied in together.

The Medical Insurance Companies are dictating how your doctor can treat you. When your medical doctor orders a diagnostic test, - if your medical insurance says no, it is no.

There is always the appeal process. But when you are sick or in pain - do you really want to wait while your insurance company fights with the doctor.

BLANK PAGE:

Our Medical Insurance and our medical coverage need a drastic change. Let us start with a blank page. This is when the changes will take place. Everybody needs to have medical care. The sooner you get the correct medical care; your medical problem will not become chronic, desperate or deadly.

While working in insurance billing, I have answered many phone calls from many irate patients. The question which was asked is… Why did my medical insurance pay such a small amount on my hospital bill? Or why was there such a small adjustment on my bill?

CONTRACTS:

All Medical Providers are contracted with Medical Insurance companies. All the contracts are different. This is how they pay your bill and also how the adjustment is made. Do you think this is fair?

We are the people. We do not care about Medical Providers contracts until they hit us right between the eyes.

CONTRACTS AND CHANGE:

The contract between Medical Providers and the Medical Insurance Companies should be all the same. This would eliminate the Contract. In this way, the insurance companies would pay each Medical Provider the same amount for each service performed. The contractual adjustments would be the same.

The games which are now played with the payment or nonpayment of claims would be eliminated or under control.

CPT CODING

Another change would be to change the coding system Medical Providers use when billing the various Medical Insurance Companies. The CPT code is the code used. This is the service performed on you, the patient, and it comes with a dollar amount. You can have more than one CPT code for each doctor’s visit.

The CPT code should be the same for each Medical Insurance Companies - and the dollar value should also be the same.

This way the insurance billing system would be unified. The Medical Insurance Companies would have to pay the same amount for each CPT code know matter what Insurance Company was billed.

These are just two suggestions from a person who has been in the Medical Billing System for almost twenty years.

CAN I APPEAL MY MEDICAL INSURANCE?

The answer is yes.

The Medical Insurance Companies have the upper hand when it comes to choosing which claims they will pay and which they will not. The reason for this is - they know about medical coding. We the public - unless you actually work in this profession - the whole process of billing a claim from a Medical Provider to a Medical Insurance Company is Greek.
