Hershel, Woody Williams Medal of Honor
I met Woody on Sat. February 9, 2008 at the Ronald Reagan Presidental Museum. I was on the patio and I noticed the staff was setting up tables and even had a red carpet. I kew something big was brewing. I walked over to this nice gentleman sitting on a bench. I asked him what was going on.
He told me there was going to be a dinner there that evening in honor of the Medal of Honor recipients. There were still 106 alive. 40+ going to be at the dinner. There were going to be 900 people at this big event.
I was really overwhelmed at meeting such a war hero. I immediately went home and looked him up on the web. What an exciting person.
He was born in 1923 in W. Virginia. His famous day was on Feb. 23, 1945 in Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands. He saved numerous lives on that day which earned him the Medal of Honor. This medal was only received by less than 4000 people since the Civil war.
He is really a hero and I am glad to have met him.

Linda,
I can’t tell you how pleased I am that you chose to write to us and relate this wonderful story about a very humble man.
Woody’s story was recently on (I believe) the History Channel and during his interview I decided that his story should be told within these pages for those who may have missed it on TV.
We try to highlight other “War Remembrances” as often as possible, since some of the stories of our men and women in uniform are truly remarkable.
Thanks again Linda - be well and best wishes.
